What is HL7?

A View From The Top

From HL7.org

Health Level Seven is one of several American National Standards Institute (ANSI) -accredited Standards Developing Organizations (SDOs) operating in the healthcare arena. Most SDOs produce standards (sometimes called specifications or protocols) for a particular healthcare domain such as pharmacy, medical devices, imaging or insurance (claims processing) transactions. Health Level Seven’s domain is clinical and administrative data

From Amry Kithman of HL7 Malaysia Inc

You went inside a store. The shop owner started talking mandarin to you knowing too well you wouldn’t understand a single word uttered….. you smile… showed him the fake Gucci bag and start asking him in English how much it will cost (knowing too well he will not understand a single word)…. He smile back and brought out a calculator… start punching some numbers…. You cried murder. Grab the calculator and punching a smaller number… he did the same thing (with slightly higher number) … and the process will continue till both see the same number on the calculator… the calculator is HL7 interface engine…

In day to day working, getting the message across to non-IT person regarding technical term sometimes can be very hard. No kidding. Sometimes, the message seems delivered, but the understanding is twisted. I’ve been studying about HL7, ICD10 and other medical related standards for quite a while now, but not seriously due to the project is delayed. I received this email from HL7 Malaysia group, the analogy he use is very simple and I like it. And applicable to integration, interop, middle ware and others as well.

And a common believe about IT, once you are IT guy, you are suppose to know EVERYTHING about IT. Why don’t the apply the same to the doctors too, once a person a doctor, he or she suppose to know EVERYTHING about medical. Gyna, Paed, Ortho, etc etc etc…

IT with IT pun, blur gak kadang2 tu. Certain terms that we use in our daily work mean differently to SAP consultant and we thought it is norm in the Steel industry.

yupp, IT to IT pun kadang ssh nak terangkan. IT ni luas bidangnya. Lagipun, bukan semua yg kerja di bidang IT kat Malaysia nih berminat dengan IT. Zaman aku belajar dulu, hampur separuh yg ditawarkan course sci-comp x mohon pun course tuh, ada yg bertukar jadi minat ada yg sekadar mengejar segulung ijazah.

Have a look at:

http://www.openehr.org

It is about an implementable specification based on a EUropean EHR standard and an ISO one soon.
